Applications in School Mathematics was published by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in 1979 as their 41st Yearbook. In the preface, yearbook editor Sidney Sharron described the challenge of the "almost boundlessness" of the topic, and the uneasiness this might present for mathematics teachers, who have likely trained to teach in the abstract but may not feel comfortable teaching applications of mathematics in areas outside their own experience. The editors collected 57 drafts, each of which was reviewed five times, and some manuscripts had to be excluded due to space constraints. Sharron was assisted by an advisory committee of Jim Hardesty, Gwen Maxie, Robert Hamada, and Donald ("Sandy") Kerr. The general yearbook editor in 1979 was Robert Reys.
