The Learning of Mathematics: Its Theory and Practice was published by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in 1953 as their 21st Yearbook. It was edited by Howard Fehr of Teachers College, Columbia University, and was the first NCTM yearbook to directed by NCTM's inaugural Yearbook Planning Committee, consisting of Mr. Walter H. Carnahan, Miss Veryl Schult, and Mr. F. Lynwood Wren. With this yearbook, Fehr asks in the preface, "How does the human brain and nervous system acquire its store of mathematical knowledge? How does the human organism use this store of knowledge once it has acquired it?" Fehr admits that relatively little was known about the answers to these questions at the time, but yet it was important for mathematics educators of all levels to study what is known.
